Heiligendamm is Germany's oldest seaside resort and has been called the "white town by the sea" for over 200 years. Classicist villas in brilliant white, a fine sandy beach and old beech forest right behind it — plus the historic Molli steam train linking the town with Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn.

Heiligendamm lies in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the Bay of Mecklenburg and belongs to the town of Bad Doberan. Founded in 1793 by Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg, it is Germany's first and therefore oldest seaside resort — the starting point of the entire German Baltic spa tradition.
Its nickname, the "white town by the sea", comes from its classicist spa architecture: a row of white houses and villas along the coast known as the Perlenkette (string of pearls), with the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm behind it. In 2007 the town hosted the G8 summit and briefly stood at the centre of world politics.
The setting is unusual: the beach borders directly on an old beech forest that reaches almost to the shore — a contrast rarely found on the Baltic coast. The Molli, a narrow-gauge steam railway dating from 1886, runs through the middle of Bad Doberan and on via Heiligendamm to Kühlungsborn. Rostock and Warnemünde are also just a short trip away.
The classicist white buildings along the coast define the town's character. A walk along the Perlenkette passes the Grand Hotel and the historic guest houses of Germany's first seaside resort.
Fine sandy beach with old beech woodland immediately behind it — an unusual combination on the Baltic. Shade and sea are only a few steps apart.
The narrow-gauge steam locomotive from 1886 connects Bad Doberan, Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn. In Bad Doberan it runs right down the middle of the street — an experience in itself, not only for railway enthusiasts.
The former Cistercian abbey church in Bad Doberan is considered a highlight of North German brick Gothic architecture and is just a few minutes away by Molli.
A few kilometres east, wind-shaped beeches and oaks stand directly on the cliff — a popular photo spot and a short, striking coastal walk.
Kühlungsborn with its pier and long promenade lies to the west, Warnemünde and Rostock to the east. Both directions make for a good day trip.
June to September brings the warmest water and long days on the beach. Spring and early autumn are the quieter choice: clear air, empty stretches of sand and the white architecture in morning light. Winter has its own appeal too — spa visits and walks along a windy beach are part of the off-season for many guests.
