Bad Doberan lies around 15 kilometres west of Rostock and about 6 kilometres from the Baltic Sea. The town is closely connected with Heiligendamm, Germany's first seaside resort, founded in 1793 and now a district of Bad Doberan.
Doberan Minster and the surviving monastery grounds reflect the medieval importance of the Cistercian abbey. Neoclassical buildings and the green Kamp shape the centre, while the narrow-gauge Molli steam train runs directly through Mollistraße.
The Molli carries visitors via Heiligendamm to Kühlungsborn. Börgerende, Warnemünde and Rostock are also within easy reach, making Bad Doberan a strong base for combining beach days with history, shopping and excursions into the wooded coastal hinterland.
Consecrated in 1368, this former Cistercian abbey church is regarded as a masterpiece of North German Brick Gothic and retains an exceptional amount of its medieval interior.
The historic narrow-gauge railway links Bad Doberan with Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn. Its slow passage directly along Mollistraße in the town centre is especially memorable.
Parts of the former Cistercian abbey survive around the Minster within spacious parkland. Paths among historic buildings, walls and mature trees invite a peaceful walk.
The green Kamp forms the elegant heart of town. The Red and White Pavilions, Prinzenpalais and other neoclassical buildings recall the height of Doberan's spa culture.
Germany's oldest seaside resort lies only about 6 kilometres away. Its white spa architecture, beach and beech forest are easy to reach by Molli, bicycle or car.
The summer toboggan run on the edge of town offers a family-friendly change from the cultural sights and can be combined easily with a visit to the centre.
Bad Doberan is rewarding throughout the year. From May to September, the Minster, Molli and town centre combine well with beach days in Heiligendamm. Spring and autumn suit cycling and walking, while the monastery and spa architecture feel especially peaceful in winter.
