The Baltic resort of Rerik lies west of Kühlungsborn on the Bay of Wismar. Here the open Baltic and the sheltered Salzhaff lagoon come remarkably close together, giving visitors two very different waterfronts in one destination.
The seaward side offers sandy and natural beaches, a distinctive cliff coast and a pier. The lagoon is generally calmer and shallower, creating good conditions for sailing, windsurfing and family outings. Haffplatz, the harbour and the fishing jetty form the town's maritime centre.
Rerik is compact and easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. The early Gothic St John's Church, megalithic tombs in the surrounding countryside and nearby Bastorf lighthouse add history and landscape to a beach holiday. Kühlungsborn, Heiligendamm and Wismar are attractive day-trip options.
The sheltered lagoon between Rerik and the Wustrow peninsula defines the town. Shallow water, broad horizons and good conditions for sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddling make it especially versatile.
West of the centre, the coast becomes wild and unspoilt. A walk above the cliffs opens wide views across the Baltic, while sand, pebbles and glacial boulders line the shore below.
The pier extends from the Baltic beach out over the water. Just a short walk away, Haffplatz, the harbour and the fishing jetty overlook the calm Salzhaff lagoon.
This early Gothic brick church is one of Rerik's historic landmarks. Its colourful interior decoration and prominent tower make it a rewarding stop away from the beach.
Several Neolithic megalithic tombs around Rerik recall the area's early settlement. They can be included in a cycling or walking route through the coastal countryside.
Set on the Kühlung ridge west of Kühlungsborn, this is one of Germany's highest-positioned lighthouses. Its surroundings offer far-reaching views over fields and the Baltic Sea.
June to September is ideal for beach days, swimming and water sports. Spring and autumn are quieter, with coastal walks, cycling and birdwatching around the Salzhaff among the best experiences. In winter, the exposed coast has its own appeal on long, bracing walks.
