Süssau lies in the sunny 'fair-weather corner' of Ostholstein – a small village right behind the dunes, best known for its natural beach stretching for miles. If you are looking for space, quiet and the Baltic Sea without the crowds, this is the place: no beach tax, plenty of room for dogs, and the resorts of Dahme and Kellenhusen just minutes away.

Süssau belongs to the municipality of Heringsdorf in the district of Ostholstein and lies between the Baltic resorts of Dahme and Kellenhusen, north of the bay of Grömitz. The village has deliberately stayed small: holiday home settlements, fields, hedgerows and, behind them, the dyke. Süssau is a retreat rather than a spa resort – and that is exactly its appeal.
Its centrepiece is Süssauer Strand, an unspoilt beach of sand and shingle running for kilometres, with no beach tax. Instead of rows of beach chairs and a promenade, you find dune grass, wide views and plenty of space. A large section of the beach is open to dogs, making Süssau one of the most popular destinations for a holiday with a dog on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic coast.
The location is ideal for day trips: Dahme with its pier and beach promenade is only a few kilometres to the south, Kellenhusen and Grömitz are quickly reached, and across the Fehmarn Sound lies the sunny island of Fehmarn. All around, rapeseed fields in spring, woodland and the neighbouring Rosenfelder Strand with its nature reserve invite long cycling and walking tours.
A natural beach stretching for kilometres with no beach tax – right behind the dunes and just a few minutes' walk from the holiday homes. Wide views, hardly any development and plenty of space even in high season.
Large sections of the beach are open to dogs. Travelling with a four-legged friend, you will find unusually much freedom to run and play by the water here.
The coast off Süssau is well known among fly and spin anglers as a sea trout stretch – especially in spring and autumn.
Just a few kilometres south: pier, beach promenade, shops and restaurants. Perfect for a day of seaside resort atmosphere without staying in the middle of it.
Directly to the north lies Rosenfelder Strand, set in a nature reserve with salt meadows and rich birdlife – a destination for quiet walks and wildlife watching.
Across the Fehmarn Sound bridge you reach Germany's sunniest region, with water sports spots, lighthouses and the harbour of Burgstaaken.
From June to September the water is warmest and the beach at its most inviting – thanks to the quiet setting it stays relaxed here even in high season. May and June impress with blooming rapeseed fields, while autumn brings clear air, wind and good conditions for fishing and long beach walks with a dog.
